The process of closing 272 LPTs (Low Power Transmitters) across the country due to digitization has been going on for the past 4-5 years.

Karnataka has 28 rebroadcasting stations out of which 11 will be shut down this month.

Each of these stations has 3-4 employees who will be assigned to vacant posts in high power transmitter (HPT) stations or vacant posts in Aakashvani.

There are 8 high power transmitter stations in the State including those in Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

Presently no one installs an antenna to receive television channels in the State. Therefore, Prasar Bharati decided to close its analogue rebroadcasting stations in a phased manner.

“As per the decision of the Director-General of Doordarshan, television rebroadcasting stations broadcasting regional programmes on Channel 5(+)’s 175.2604 MHz at Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district and Channel 6’s 182.25 MHz in Koppa will suspend their broadcasts from August 31,” said M Ramanna Naik, Assistant Engineer, Doordarshan Kendra (HPT), Mangaluru.
