Mysuru: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has renewed permission for all the recently begun government medical colleges, except Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences. This decision comes as a boon to medical aspirants in the State because they would not have to wait until the last date for seeking admission into government medical colleges.

The MCI has also recommended the Central Government to renew permission to the government medical colleges of Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Karwar, Raichur, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Belagavi and Bidar. These colleges will have 150 seats each. The meeting also approved the increase in intake of students at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, from 150 to 200. But, the council will not recommend the Central Government to renew the permission for the admission of the fourth batch of 150 MBBS students into Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences.

Though the State Government had promised the establishment of medical colleges in districts like Chikkamagaluru and Bagalkot this year, Sachidananda, Director of the Medical Education Department, clarified that no government or private medical colleges will be set up this year.
