M’luru: Man dies in police custody; Compol orders probe

Mangaluru: A 30-year-old man reportedly died when in the custody of the police here on Friday and his family have demanded a thorough probe into his death.

Rajesh (30) of Urwa and another accomplice were taken into custody by the Bunder Police early morning on Friday while trying to loot the iron rods stored at Ambedkar circle for Smart City Project work. They were both taken to Bunder police station and interrogated.

But in the afternoon, Rajesh was taken to the Wenlock District Hospital as he complained of chest pains. The doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead, media reports said.

Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar told reporters that Rajesh was an alcoholic. As the death occurred in police detention, the family has appealed for a thorough inquiry into his death, he said.

Further, the Compol added that all the CCTV footage at the station will be checked and the death will be investigated by ACP Mahesh Kumar. There will be a magisterial inquiry also, he said.
