Monsoon Arrives in Karnataka, Heavy Rain Expected in Several Districts

Bengaluru: As anticipated, the monsoon entered the state on Sunday, covering most parts of South Karnataka. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted that the monsoon will spread to the remaining parts of the state in the next 2-3 days.

The monsoon has already reached Bengaluru and most parts of South Karnataka. Favorable conditions are expected to bring monsoon rains to the rest of Karnataka within 2-3 days.

Light to widespread rain is likely along the coast, northern, and southern interiors until June 6. Winds are expected to blow at speeds of 40-50 km/h.

A yellow alert has been issued for Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Vijayapura, Koppal, Bagalkot, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya, and Kodagu districts, predicting heavy rain over the next two to three days. Bengaluru is expected to experience moderate rain until June 6, according to weather expert C.S. Patil.

Meanwhile, several areas in the Old Mysuru region received rain on Saturday night and Sunday. In Nagamangala taluk, Mandya district, heavy rain on Saturday night caused more than 15 electric poles to fall, resulting in power outages in several villages.

Temple Collapses

In Mandya district’s Kikkeri town, a storm accompanied by rain on Saturday night caused damage to the ancient Janardhan temple, built during the Hoysala period. The temple, with its beautiful stone carvings, is now at risk of collapsing, causing concern among nearby residents.

In Hunsur taluk, Mysuru district, heavy rain and storms uprooted hundreds of trees. Some trees fell on houses, and fields were flooded, causing significant crop damage. The Kirangur-Haralahalli road is blocked, and fallen electric poles have disrupted the power supply.

Moderate rain was also reported in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on Sunday.

KRS Reservoir inflow increases

Due to good pre-monsoon rains in the Cauvery basin over the past 25 days, the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir in Mandya district has seen an increase of four feet in water levels.

Yellow alert in coastal districts

Mangaluru/Udupi: According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon arrived in the coastal regions of Karnataka on Sunday. However, the typical rainy season atmosphere was not present in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Normally, when the monsoon hits the Karnataka coast, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts experience continuous rain with overcast skies throughout the day. But as of Sunday evening, the rainfall in the coastal region was relatively low.

IMD officials stated that the monsoon, which has covered Mangaluru and Chitradurga areas, is expected to spread across the state in the coming days. Good rainfall is anticipated along the coast over the next three to four days.

This year’s monsoon is expected to bring normal levels of rainfall. The monsoon reached the Kerala coast on May 30 and typically spreads to Karnataka within the next few days. Unlike previous years, when the monsoon would hit the Karnataka coast around June 6, this year it has arrived slightly earlier.

In Dakshina Kannada, rainfall was sparse until Sunday evening. Mangaluru experienced rain late Sunday night. The day saw a mix of sun and clouds, with some areas of the district receiving good rainfall with thunderstorms in the evening and night.

The weather remained humid, with an increase in maximum temperatures. Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6°C, which is 0.6°C higher than normal, and a minimum temperature of 25.6°C, which is 1.2°C higher than normal.

According to the IMD forecast, heavy rain is expected along the coastal region from June 3 to 6, and a yellow alert has been issued for this period.
