MRPL temporarily shuts down two units due to water scarcity

Mangaluru: Two units of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) have been temporarily shut down owing to shortage of drinking water.

Currently, the second unit is continuing operations by making use of other water sources and treated effluents coming from the city.

While the functioning of MRPL’s third unit was shut for annual maintenance works during April end the first unit was shut down temporarily on May 9 because of the fall in water level at Sarapadi dam in Bantwal.

Briefing about the issue, Managing director of MRPL, Venkatesh M, said that the second unit is continuing refining operations by using treated effluents of the city and that operations can continue unhindered till the first week of June.

Further he added that as rains are expected by first week of June, the company does not foresee any grave problem.
