No Plans to Shut Karnataka State Open University: Minister Clarifies

Bengaluru: Karnataka state higher education minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has clarified that the state government has no plans to shut Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru and rejected media reports which stated the government has planned to close the university after it lost University Grants Commission’s (UGC) recognition. The minister was speaking in a press conference here in Bengaluru on Monday.

The minister expressed his helplessness and said, he wrote four separate letters to Union Human Resource Minister to solve the issue of UGC recognition however no action has been taken yet by the central government on the issue. UGC is still silent even if KSOU fulfilled the UGC conditions to regain its recognition. The minister has also noted that the UGC chairman denied for a meeting with him to solve all issuers related to the recognition.

The minister has also added that the state government has no direct control over the universities in the state and is unable to investigate the irregularities, if reported.
