The 93rd annual Academy Awards made history even before the first award was handed out. Oscar nominees this year mark the first an all-Black producing team has been nominated for best picture, the first time two actors of Asian descent were nominated for best actor, and the first year that two women were nominated for best director.

Chloe Zhao won the best director award, becoming the first woman of colour and only the second woman in the Oscars’ history to take home the trophy.

Soul won the best-animated feature award, also Pixar’s first film to feature a Black lead character. Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, two-thirds of the hairstyling and makeup team behind “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” made history as the pair becomes the first black women to win for best makeup and hairstyling.
