Packed beaches, special prayers mark new year across coastal dists

As the clock struck midnight, ushering in the dawn of a new year, coastal districts Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, were ablaze with festive fervor. Residents and tourists alike joined in the celebrations that featured an array of entertainment activities, music, dance, and joyous gatherings across various parts of the district.

The festivities commenced on Sunday evening and extended well into the night. Many thronged to the captivating coastal city’s beaches. Hotels, resorts, and homestays experienced high occupancy rates, attesting to the popularity of the coastal districts.

Religious institutions played a pivotal role in marking the transition to the new year. Special worship services took place in temples, shrines, and churches.

Mangaluru’s star hotels hosted lively New Year’s Eve parties, while various hospitality venues, including hotels, halls, and malls, arranged special celebratory gatherings.

The Mangaluru Police Commissionerate facilitated outdoor celebrations at beaches and parks until 10 pm and indoor events in churches, hotels, resorts, and halls until 12:30 am, ensuring a balance between revelry and safety.

The last sunset of 2023 was a moment of reflection and celebration for many, especially those at the beaches and tourist spots. Public parties and DJ nights illuminated the night, and as the clock struck midnight, the city echoed with the cheers of those cutting cakes and bursting firecrackers to welcome the new year.

The coastal beaches, including Panambur, Thannirbavi, and Malpe, attracted crowds from both within and outside the district. Tourists reveled in the joy of New Year celebrations, contributing to the lively atmosphere.

To maintain order and safety, the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate deployed more than 850 policemen, ensuring strict checks against drunk driving. Their presence was particularly visible at checkpoints, assuring a secure environment for the celebrations.

In Udupi district, the new year was embraced with enthusiasm. Thousands of people gathered to ring in the new year, cutting cakes and dancing as the clock struck midnight. The evening witnessed an increase in tourist footfall at popular beaches like Malpe, Padukare, Kundapur, Kaup, and Padubidri, with accommodations around the city reaching full occupancy.

The authorities in Udupi set time limits for New Year celebrations, allowing loudspeakers and DJ sound until 10 pm and overall festivities until 12:30 am. The police and home guard teams maintained a vigilant watch to prevent any untoward incidents, conducting inspections and raids as necessary.

On a spiritual note, Christians in the D.K. and Udupi districts embraced the new year with special prayers in churches. The Bishop of Udupi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo, emphasized the importance of following the path shown by God and praying for world peace in the coming year.

Special prayers were conducted in churches across the region, with prominent religious figures such as Archbishop Valerian Mendonza and various pastors participating in the ceremonies. The celebrations included cultural programs and cake distribution organized by youth organizations within the churches.

Meanwhile, the Bishop of Mangaluru, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, delivered a message encouraging everyone to embrace the new year with hope and positive deeds.
