Peraje: Mother-son duo sentenced to life imprisonment in murder case

Aranthodu: The principal district and sessions court in Madikeri has convicted a mother-and-son duo for their involvement in the murder of Uttam Kumar in Peraje village on May 8, 2020.

The convicts, Tarini (46) and Dharani Kumar (22), were sentenced to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each.

Tarini, the wife of victim Uttama Kumar’s elder brother, and her son Dharani Kumar, had quarreled with him, abused him, and attacked him with sharp weapons, inflicting injuries on his neck, arms, thighs, and other parts of the body, leading to his death.

The case was registered at the Madikeri Rural Police Station. Following an investigation, the police arrested the accused on May 9, 2020, and presented them before the court.

The investigation, led by Inspector C.N. Divakar and assisted by ASI Sridhar, concluded with a charge sheet filed before the Madikeri district court on July 14, 2020.

During the trial, Judge Hosamani Pundalik pronounced the verdict on Thursday, sentencing the accused to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each for the murder. Additionally, they were sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs 10,000 each for evidence tampering. Public prosecutor K.G. Ashwini represented the prosecution.
