According to Dr. N Puviarasan, a scientist from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a trough or wind discontinuity is extending from Marathwada to the Comorin area across interior Karnataka and Kerala, at an altitude of 0.9 km above mean sea level.

This suggests that districts like Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Mysuru should be ready for gusty winds and heavy rain in the upcoming days, he said.

Moderate rainfall is also expected in several other districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Chikkaballapura, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Ballari, Gadag, Bengaluru Rural and Urban, Kolar, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Mandya, Davangere, Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Vijayanagara, Haveri, Koppal, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Raichur, and Yadgir.

Specifically for Bengaluru, widespread thunderstorms and rains are predicted over Coastal, Malenadu, North and South Interior Karnataka regions from May 16 onwards, with heavy rains anticipated between May 18 to 21. The city is also likely to experience heavy thunderstorms between May 17 to 21 May, with significant rainfall expected during this period.

Light to moderate rains are expected in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts on May 17. Moderate rain with thundershowers may occur in the rest of the districts. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts will experience light to moderate rain on May 18, and similar conditions are expected on May 19 as well, stated Dr. N. Puviarasan.
