Renowned Yakshagana artist Pethri Balakrishna Nayak passes away at 58

The Yakshagana community mourned the loss of the legendary artist, Pethri Balakrishna Nayak, who passed away at the age of 58 after a brief illness. Born to Vitthala Nayak and Shantabai in Karje near Mekho Brahmavara, he was affectionately known as “Petri Balanna” in Yakshagana circles.

Balakrishna, who learned the intricacies of the art form under the guidance of the acclaimed Heranjalu Venkataramana Ganigar, famously titled Dashavatari, commenced his artistic journey at the Maranakatte Mela. Throughout his career, he collaborated with esteemed artists in Mandarthi, Megaravalli, Madamakki, Haladi, Kalavadi, Hiriadka Melas, showcasing his skills as a Mundasu (costume) artist.

Known for representing the Matapadi style in the arena, Balakrishna was recognized for his versatile performances and colorful disguises. His portrayal of Veerabhadra’s character in the Hiriyadaka Mela catapulted him to fame. Additionally, his vocal prowess justified the portrayal of various villainous characters. Despite being an auto driver in his later years, Balakrishna continued to contribute to Yakshagana programs, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
