Rude shock for Karnataka residents as KERC hikes electricity rates again

Bengaluru: Electricity consumers in the state are in for a rude shock, as the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has announced a hike in electricity tariff. The decision comes shortly after the conclusion of the state elections, leaving residents of Karnataka dismayed.

Consumers across the state will experience an average increase of 70 paise per unit on their electricity bills. The hike will be applicable retrospectively from April 1, 2023. The rate hike encompasses both fixed charges and power consumption charges, as stated by the KERC.

The Congress party, in its election manifesto, had announced to provide free electricity up to 200 units to every household in the state.
