In the first instance, that took place on November 20, a man at a local medical shop claimed he needed Rs 1,000 in cash and would transfer the amount via Google Pay. When the shop owner grew suspicious, the man fled.
In another incident on November 19, five men arrived in a white car, and one approached Karavali Hotel in Kallugundi, requesting Rs 3,000 in cash. Hotel owner Rafique denied the request, but a customer, Suresh, lent the amount. The fraudster showed a fake Google Pay confirmation on his phone. He later repeated the scam at a fish market, tricking vendor Arun Kairthodi into giving him Rs 3,000.
Police have urged locals to be cautious and report such fraudulent activities.
