Mangaluru: Preparation for this year’s Kambala sport have begun and this year’s conduction of the traditional sport is expected to be without any legal hindrances, and the fact has doubled the happiness if the organizers and fans.

The timetable for this year’s Kambla events was prepared at the district kambala committee meeting held at Moodbidri on Oct 6th and the first event of this cycle will begin on Nov 23rd. altogether 20 kambalas will be conducted. Although there is a small chance that some dates might change, the timetable has not been officially announced, informed sources.

Kambala, which has been conducted under the law since 2014 was stopped in 2016-17. This attracted widespread anger among the people and huge protests were held against this. Later, under the order of the president and the amendment of the law, kambala was once again held in 2017-18 without any legal blocks.

However, the the legal fight against Kambala is still being carried out and therefore the sport is still facing a threat as the petition filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals in the Supreme Court is pending in the constitution bench.

According to the organization, the new law brought by Karnataka to allow Kambala is illegal. Taking into consideration the allegation of violence raised by the organization, during last year, sticks were not used during the Kambalas organized at Moodbidri, Kakyapadavu and Paivalike.

The time table is being given finishing touches and that Kambala will be held during this season without any hitch, informed P R Shetty district Kambala Committee president.
