V Boobathi, who lives in Ammapet’s Gandhi Maidan, fulfilled his dream last week when he swapped his one-rupee coins for a Dominar 400 motorcycle at a Bajaj showroom (a total of Rs 2.6 lakh). Boobathi and his friends drove a minivan full of gunny bags to the showroom on March 26 to deliver the coins. Boobathi is a computer operator who holds a BCA degree.
He allegedly approached the showroom three years ago regarding the bike and was quoted a price of roughly Rs. 2 lakh. According to TOI, the computer operator didn’t have enough money at the moment to buy the bike of his dreams. “I didn’t have so much money at the time. I decided to save money from the revenue earned from the YouTube channel,” he said.
“I recently inquired about the cost of the bike and learned that it was (Rs) 2.6 lakh on-road now. And I had the amount this time.”
Mahavikranth, the showroom manager, was initially hesitant to take payment in 2.6 lakh coins, but eventually agreed to seal the deal.
Mahavikranth told TOI, “The banks would charge (Rs) 140 as commission for counting 1 lakh (in 2000 rupee denomination). How will they accept it when we give them Rs 2.6 lakh in one-rupee coins?,”
Boobathi and his four friends helped count the money alongside five other members of the dealership’s personnel. The crew took ten hours to count the money, which totaled Rs. 2.6 lakh.
