Udupi: 1962, 1971 war veteran Col Ramachandra Rao (Retd) passes away

Udupi: Retired Indian Army officer and social worker Colonel Ramachandra Rao (Retd), 88, passed away on Monday.

Colonel Rao had fought in the military conflict with China in 1962 and 1967 and in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

After retirement, he settled in Udupi and was involved in the retired soldiers association and served in the governing body of Poornaprajna College, Sri Krishna Bal Niketan and several other organizations.

He started the Naveen Pejawar Trust and supported the poor through it.

In 2017, he and his wife Malathi Rao were awarded the Gopalakrishna Memorial Sevabhushan Award.

Colonel Rao is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

MLA Raghupati Bhat, president of Yakshagana Kalaranga M Gangadhar Rao and secretary Murali Kadekar expressed condolences.
