Udupi: Veteran artisanal saree maker from the temple town, Vyasaraya Shettigar (79), has been awarded the Shanta Prasad Award for Excellence in Weaving for 2020 by the Crafts Council of India. Shettigar is one of the nine weavers who can weave the fine 80 count Butta sarees and is fondly called 'master' for having taught numerous weavers the skill of saree weaving. Shettigar has been weaving since the age of 15 and presently works with other weavers in Padupanambur Weavers Co-operative Society. An official award ceremony was scheduled on April 18 but has been postponed.
