Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Hebbalkar mentioned that a review meeting was held in advance in Udupi to ensure preparedness for the monsoon season. Instructions were given to cut down trees that were in danger of falling. Approximately 400 such trees have been cut, and 80 electric poles have been relocated.
Water has inundated some low-lying areas, and people from these regions have been moved to care centers. Keeping in mind the problems faced last year due to the rains, extra caution has been exercised this time. Landslides have damaged a few houses, resulting in one fatality. The district administration has already been instructed to provide swift relief in this regard, Hebbalkar added.
She further stated that Udupi city lacks an underground drainage system, causing water to stagnate on roads during heavy rainfall. Since she took charge as the in-charge minister, a decision has been made to construct a drainage system, and the tender process will commence in a couple of weeks. Due to the heavy rainfall yesterday, schools and colleges have been declared closed today, she said.
