Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidyakumari issued an order on July 26, banning the movement of heavy vehicles on National Highway 169A from July 27 until September 15. During this period only light vehicle traffic will be allowed on the hilly road.

The decision comes after the discovery of small cracks, road subsidence, and the collapse of a barrier wall, particularly at turns 6, 7, and 11 of the Agumbe Ghat section of Thirthahalli-Udupi NH, believed to be caused by heavy rains and the traffic of heavy vehicles.

Concerns were raised that if immediate action is not taken, the road’s condition may deteriorate further, posing a serious risk of accidents.

During this period, heavy vehicles are advised to utilize alternate routes to reach their destinations i.e. Thirthahalli – Udupi via Thirthahalli-Agumbe-Shringeri-Malaghat-Karkala-Udupi or Thirthahalli – Udupi via Thirthahalli-Mastikatte-Siddapura-Kundapura-Udupi.
