Udupi: Interstate thief arrested in chain snatching incident

Udupi: An inter-state thief has been arrested by police in connection with an incident of chain snatching that occurred recently in the city limits.

The accused has been identified as Moulali Jamadar, a resident of Dandeli Patel Nagar, police said.

A thief had snatched and fled with a gold weighing 50 grams worn by Prema Shenaca near MGM College on October 3. A case has been registered at the Udupi City police station in this regard, police said.

Based on the CCTV footage and mobile records, Jamadar was traced and arrested police said and added that the stolen gold chain was sold at a jewellery shop in Toll Naka, Dharwad. Gold jewellery weighing 63 grams worth about Rs 3 lakhs was also seized form his possession.

According to police, the accused has also confessed to having carried out the theft at the residence of Dr Prajna K Srikanth at Kadiyali in the year 2021.

Meanwhile, the accused has been remanded to police custody.

He lived in prison

Jamadar has several theft cases registered against him at various police stations in Karnataka and Goa including Dandeli Rural Police Station, Kaladagi Police Station in Bagalkote District, Alnavar Police Station in Dharwad, and Madgaon and Ponda Police Stations in Goa.

He had been recently released from prison after serving a sentence, police added.
