Union Govt Opposes Denotification of Lakes: Union Minister Uma Bharati

New Delhi/Bengaluru: Union government won’t permit any state government or authority to denotify lakes in the country, said Union Minister for Water Resource, Uma Bharati answering to a question in Lok Sabha on Thursday. The minister also clarified that no official communication has been received from Karnataka state government on its move to denotify 1, 600 lakes in the state.  Her statement came in the wake of media reports which stated Karnataka government has moved forward to denotify 1, 600 lakes in the state.

If Karnataka state government sends proposal to denotify the lakes to the union ministry, then the centre will ask the state to detailed report on its move, she added. Union government is planning to promote water conservation in the country in the wake of acute water shortage in many regions and steep decline in rainfall activities in the country, minister added.
