Tallur: The construction of a saltwater barrier at Maranamane near Uppinakudru within Talluru gram panchayat has started. The work is expected to be completed by April 2020.
The Irrigation Department sanctioned a grant of Rs 2 crores for the project. The barrier is 2450 metres long. The barrier will start from Sansalkatte and end at the Rajadi bridge on the Tallur-Hemmadi stretch of the NH 66.
Initially, the plan was to build a barrier of 750 metres but after villagers requested to Byndoor MLA B M Sukumar Shetty that the barrier with such small length will be of no use, authorities increased the length of the barrier.
The local farmers have been demanding the construction of a barrier since long as salty water seeping into their fields have been causing considerable damages to their paddy and sugarcane crops.
