Sand mined from here is mostly sent to Bengaluru.

Sand is being mined from about half a kilometre stretch along the river. A road has been built for this purpose blocking the naturally flowing river.

Sand mining operations are also ongoing at Tekkaru, Biliuru, Kadeshivalaya along the Netravati river and at Kadaba, Alankaru, Hirebandadi and Adekal along the Kumaradhara river.

Additionally, mining is also being carried out along the Gundya river at Gundya, Udane, Icchalampadi and Nujibaltil.

Locals have demanded action against these mining activities from the Department of Mines alleging that most of them are illegal.

“Some of the sand miners are licensed by the Department of Mines. If there are complaints about illegal sand mining, appropriate action will be taken,” said Uppinangady Sub Inspector Irayya.
