Kundapur: The small vented dam at Jalady which was like a boon for hundreds of acres of farmland in Hemmady and Katbeluru village collapsed once again on Thursday and flooded hundreds of acres of farmland with salt water.

The dam which is located at Hosakalu in Jalady and during the tides, there is rise and fall in the salt water. The vented dam here had already collapsed a bit.

On Wednesday, MLA B M Sukumar Shetty visited the location and conducted inspection. He informed that the grant for the dam and breakwater has been approved. Now, even before laying the foundation stone for the works, the old dam appears to have collapsed. In order to prevent any further collapse of the dam, the MLA had asked to dump 10 loads of mud, but even before that, it collapsed.

There are almost 60 houses here and if salt water enters the farmlands, paddy cannot be cultivated in the next season. Besides, it is not possible to grow vegetables in the land which has already finished with black gram. Therefore, the villagers are requesting the department to respond immediately.
