Bengaluru: The Waqf land notification issue, causing concern across Karnataka, has now reached the central government’s attention. Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) Chairman Jagdambika Pal, overseeing the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, is scheduled to visit Hubballi and Vijayapura on November 7 to interact with affected farmers, according to Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

Surya, a JPC member, had requested Pal to meet with farmers in Vijayapura District to discuss Waqf land disputes. Acting on this request, Pal will visit Hubballi and Vijayapura to engage with farmers allegedly affected by Waqf encroachments.

During the visit, the JPC Chairman will hold discussions with farmer organizations and consider petitions submitted by Mathadheeshs (heads of religious institutions) and others. Surya reported that several farmers, who have been cultivating their lands for over a century, recently received notices declaring their properties as Waqf lands without any official documentation or explanation.

Tejasvi Surya also tweeted: “Chairman of JPC on Waqf has kindly consented to my request to visit Hubli and Bijapur on 7th November to interact with farmers affected by the Waqf’s predatory action. Chairman will interact with farmer organisations, Mutts, and petitions given to him will be placed before JPC.”
