Winter session of Karnataka Legislature begins today

Bengaluru: The Belagavi Winter Session of the Karnataka Legislature commences today with a mix of anticipation and political intrigue. While such sessions typically see the opposition mounting aggressive attacks on the ruling party, this time, the Congress government appears equally prepared to counter the opposition’s onslaught. The session is poised to become a battleground for intense political debates.

Opposition’s Arsenal

The opposition parties, BJP and JD(S), are armed with several issues to corner the government. Key among them are:

• Allegations of corruption in the Valmiki Development Corporation.
• The MUDA site allocation ‘scam’, including ED notices.
• Infant deaths in North Karnataka hospitals.
• Controversies surrounding Waqf notices issued to farmers.
• Alleged irregularities in excise department operations.
• Complaints about insufficient funds for welfare schemes.

Ruling Party’s Counter-Strategies

The Congress, despite being on the defensive over various allegations, is likely to launch counterattacks focusing on:

• Factional infighting within the BJP.
• BJP’s poor performance in the recent bypolls.
• Irregularities alleged during BJP’s tenure, including de-notification of land.
• Accusations of discrimination in central funding.
• Irregularities during the COVID-19 response under BJP rule.

Internal Turmoil in Both Camps

While the BJP is attempting to resolve internal discontent and leadership issues through core committee meetings led by national leaders, the Congress, too, is grappling with factional tensions. Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar’s indirect reminders of the power-sharing agreement with CM Siddaramaiah have caused ripples within the party. Although Siddaramaiah denied the existence of such an agreement, Shivakumar’s silence has fueled speculation about internal rifts.

Key Issues for Discussion

Amid political wrangling, crucial topics like relief for farmers affected by unseasonal rains, North Karnataka’s irrigation projects (including Mahadayi), and regional development programs risk being overshadowed. Speaker U.T. Khader has emphasized the importance of meaningful debates on these matters.

The session will run from December 9 to 20. However, discussions are underway to adjourn the proceedings on December 19 to accommodate the Mandya Sahitya Sammelana.
