Yakshagana artist Mururu Vishnu Bhat passes away

Mururu Vishnu Gajanana Bhat, a renowned Yakshagana artist known for his exceptional portrayal of female characters, passed away on Sunday at the age of 65.

Born in Murur, Kumta taluk, Vishnu, who made his mark as a female artist, began his journey in the Yakshagana world following his SSLC. With a career spanning four decades, he became a well-known name among Yakshagana enthusiasts.

Vishnu’s initial training in Yakshagana came under the guidance of Mururu Rama Hegde.

Throughout his illustrious career, Bhat lent his talents to various troupes, including Gundubala, Amriteshwari, Hiremahalingeshwar, Shirasi, Panchalinga, Perdur, Idagunji, and Poornchandra Melas. His portrayal of both mythological and modern female characters garnered him a dedicated fan base.

Notable roles such as Dakshayini, Sita, Ambe, Mandodari, Menake, Chandramati, Damayanti, Prabhavati, Savitri, Shakuntale, and Vidyadhar, among others, showcased his graceful dancing, soulful performances, and eloquent speech.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Yakshagana, Vishnu Bhat received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Kota Vaikunta Award and the Chittani Award from the Udupi Yakshagana Kalaranga.
