The victim a person who claimed herself as Dr Camilla Gampi from London befriended Dr Praveen Kumar (43) from Brahmavar Handadi in the district on Facebook by sending him a friend request. Sometime after Dr Kumar had accepted the friend request, he received a call from the lady on April 30. In the call she informed him that she was stuck at the Delhi airport because of objections raised by customs officials and claimed that she needed Rs 2 lakh urgently to pay customs duty. She also mentioned that she had pound sterling currency in her possession which the customs officers had refused to accept.
Dr Praveen transferred Rs 50,000 by way of Syndicate Bank’s mobile app and balance Rs 1, 45,700 by RTGS to the lady doctor believing she was in trouble and was in need of Indian currency urgently. Since then, her mobile has remained switched off.
Realizing the folly and frustrated, the doctor approached the police who are currently investigating the case.
