The Union government in its report stated that 1,569 farmers committed suicide in 2015 of which 372 were farm workers. Every year, as many as 12,000 farmers take the extreme step following the plight of country’s farming sector since 2013, it is said.

Maharashtra tops the list beating Karnataka where 3,030 farmer suicide incidents were reported in 2015.

The information was shared by the Centre after an order by the Apex Court on a PIL urging the Court to direct the Union government to prevent farmer suicides in the country. Hearing the appeal, the court observed on Tuesday that the matter was out of the jurisdiction of the Judiciary instead should be handled by the Executive.
