Farmers' suicides rate increases 32% in Karnataka in 2016

New Delhi/Bengaluru: Union Agriculture Minister Radhamohan Singh told Parliament on Friday that the framer’s suicides rate in Karnataka has ascended by 32% in 2016,

Singh, citing from provisional data accumulated by the National Crime Records Bureau, said the farmer segment in Karnataka saw 2,079 suicides in 2016 as against the 1,569 in 2015. Of the 2,079 suicides, 861 were agricultural workers while 1212 were farmers/cultivators, as indicated by the information presented by the agriculture minister in the Rajya Sabha.

“The number farmers and agricultural workers in India during 2016 have descended from 12602 to 11370 roughly by 9.77%,” Singh said in answer to an inquiry put by Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut.

The highest numbers of farmer’s suicides were accounted from Maharashtra. In 2016, the state saw 3661 suicides 1111 by cultivate workers and 2550 by agriculturists and cultivators as against the 4291 suicides in 2015.

Madhya Pradesh positioned third with 1321 people from the farming sector suicide records in 2016 as against 1290 out of 2015.
