Floods Affect Normal Life on Banks of River Bhima in Karnataka with Heavy Crop Damage

Afzalpur: Almost all bridges submerged in water in Kalburgi district as water level recorded an up-tick following heavy rainfall activities in the district and neighbouring Maharashtra. Vehicle traffic on roads and bridges in many parts of the district has been stalled as a result of floods.

Many villages including Devala Ganagapura, Chinamalli and others located on the banks of River Bhima in Kalburgi have been isolated from neighbouring areas as water level moved up significantly. Many villages in Vijayapura district have also been isolated from their neighbouring areas.

Heavy crop damage reported in Kalburgi district as crops including sugarcane, cotton, sunflower and others damaged significantly due to continues rainfall activities. Exact data on crop damage is yet to be prepared by the concerned departments of the districts. As of now River Bhima has an inflow of 1.45 lakh cusec with the same outflow. Out of 29 gates of Sonna Reservoir, 18 gates have been opened to reduce the flood intensity.
