The new school will be led by RS Deshpande, Economist, Former Director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC). Karnataka state government has setup BASE on the lines of London School of Economics and the government has completed first round talks to have faculty exchange programme with London School of Economics.
The selection for the first batch of BASE will be made through a common entrance test (CET) and the CET has been completed in Pune, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. The first year classes will be conducted at Jnana Bharathi campus of Bangalore University as BASE is yet to get building for its functioning.
Initially, the school will have strength of 50 students and the number students will be raised to 1,100 once BASE becomes completely operational. According to the norms setup, 60% of the students will be from Karnataka State, including 30 per cent from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The remaining 40% will be from other states. There is no course fee for SC and ST students whereas a fee of Rs. 50,000 a year will be collected from others.
