High Court Adjourns Hearing on Luxurious Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Vidhana Soudha

Bengaluru: Karnataka high court has adjourned its hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking court’s intervention into the state government’s luxurious spending on diamond jubilee celebration of Vidhana Soudha.

Hearing the PIL on Wednesday, the court adjourned its trial to October 26 and asked the petitioner SN Aravind to provide further explanation on his argument and present information on any law which authorises the court to stop such a public event. Advocate SN Aravind has also urged the court to pass necessary direction to the state government to stop such a luxurious celebration.

The petitioner informed the court that the government need not to spend such a huge amount collected from tax payers’ of the state instead it can celebrate the diamond jubilee by organising a simple public events.  

Earlier, Karnataka state government had decided to spend around Rs 26 crore to celebrate diamond jubilee of the state legislature. However, later it reduced its plan to Rs 10 crore following criticism from the opposition parties and the public.
