Bengaluru: Law Minister J C Madhuswamy on Friday, September 6 informed that the state Cabinet has approved to rename Hyderabad-Karnataka region as Kalyana Karnataka.
Addressing pressperson after attending a cabinet meeting Madhuwamy informed, "The Hyderabad-Karnataka Regional Development Board (HKRDB) will be renamed as Kalyana Karnataka Regional Development Board on September 17."
He further informed that the Cabinet also requested Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to constitute a new committee to review the progress in the development of the Kalyana Karnataka region, because the existing committee’s term has expired.
The change in name comes after demands by legislators and others from the region to do away with the colonial-era nomenclature that associated the region with the erstwhile Nizams of Hyderabad.
The Hyderabad-Karnataka region, which enjoys special status under the Constitution (Article 371J) owing to its backwardness, comprises Bidar, Ballari, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir.
