The deceased was injured when wrestling with Davanagere based Mohammed Ali in the 97 kg Greco-Roman wrestling competition. He was admitted to the district hospital soon after the incident and the doctors there found that there were three separate injuries on thy bone as it was broken into three pieces. He was transferred from Dharwad district hospital to SDM Hospital and finally was brought to KIMS Hospital for advanced treatment.
The doctors at KIMS operated for eight hours to complete a surgery on his thigh on Monday. Soon after the surgery, he was admitted to ICU to keep a vigil on his health condition. Despite all efforts, the patient died on Tuesday at around 11.30 AM.
Fat embolism caused the death of the wrestler. A fat embolism occurs when fat globules are released into the bloodstream. Its most commonly associated with a trauma, such as a bone fracture, said KIMS Medical Commissioner Dr Shivappa Shettar Anura. Fat embolism paused the heart beat of the patient resulting his death, he added.
