International Day of Non-Violence: Everything you need to know

Every year on Oct 2, the world celebrates the International Day of Non-Violence. Mahatma Gandhi gave the world the philosophy of non-violence or Ahimsa.

The UN General Assembly in a resolution on 15 June 2007, commemorated the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as the International Day of Non-violence. The UN said, the objective of the day is to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness”.

The resolution reaffirms “the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence” and the desire “to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”

The 2020 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Shaping Peace Together.” Many people, governments, and non-government organizations around the world observe the International Day of Non-Violence through various events and activities
