Karnataka asks the tribunal to submit detailed project report for diversion of Mahadayi water

New Delhi/Bengaluru: The Karnataka government on Thursday fought before the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal that it ought to be permitted to present its Detailed Project Report (DPR) for diversion of 7 TMC ft of surplus water accessible at Kotni dam. It said that no state ought to use any water from the proposed ventures without getting endorsement or clearances under the provisions of the Central Acts.

Contending for the benefit of Karnataka, its counsel Mohan V Katarki submitted before a bench managed by Justice J M Panchal that the central government ought to constitute a supervisory board of trustees headed by a retired officer of the rank of secretary and four specialized individuals each appointed by Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa and the Centre for the purposes.

The Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa states should present their Detailed Project Reports for the different ventures totalling not more than 14.98 tmcft, 6.34 tmcft and 85.366 tmcft separately to the Central Water Commission for its specialized evaluation, it stated.

It also said that “Once the grievance of Goa registered on July 9, 2002, stands expelled, there is no obstruction in allowing the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra from continuing with their plans to divert water in particular 14.98 TMC ft and 6.34 TMC ft, separately,”

The Karnataka government additionally kept up that following the water balance investigation of the entire Mahadayi basin on the yield evaluated by the CWC in 2003 as 199.6 tmcft, the enthusiasm of Goa won’t be influenced preferentially.
