Karnataka church blasts: Muslim youth granted interim bail by SC

Bengaluru: An convict in Karnataka church blast, who was dubbed by the high court as a misguided Muslim youth indulging in anti-national activity has been released on interim bail by the Supreme Court.

Izher Baig was convicted and awarded life imprisonment for blasts at St Ann’s Church, Kalaburagi, St Peter and Paul church in Bengaluru and St John Luthern Church in Hubballi and accidental blast at Minerva Mills in Bengaluru.

The bench hearing the case imposed certain conditions – Baig shall report to the Asifnagar Police Station in Hyderabad every day and shall not leave Hyderabad/Secundarabad without the permission of the court- before garnting bail to Baig.

Serial blasts in the state were carried ourt between June and July 2000. On 8 July 2000, a blast took place at the St Johns Lutheran Church in Hubbali. On 9 July 2000, a bomb exploded at the St Peter Paul Church in Bengaluru.
