Karnataka will soon be using blockchain technology in property registrations

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is developing a system based on blockchain technology for online property documentation.

Storage of property data through blockchain means that the data once stored cannot be changed, eliminating the risk of unauthorized tweaking of property records.

This new system is being developed in collaboration with IIT-Kanpur. It was approved by the Revenue Department and would be ready for a pilot in four months, said Rajeev Chawla, Additional Chief Secretary (e-governance).

He further informed that no official will be able to hamper with the data unless authorized.

As per reports, each property holder will be given a property card with a PIN. The property details can be accessed by the property holder using the digital key or PIN number.

Nobody will be able to modify the data in the card unless consent is provided.

This new system, apart from protecting a property holder’s data also removes the hassle of storing hard copies of documents. A card user will be able to swipe the card at a citizen service centre such as Bangalore One and download or print the documents.

An official associated with the project said that presently the identification of property data depends on human discretion for verification of identity and ownership. Adding that with this new system identification of property from the database in a sub registrar’s office will become easy.

The new system is also expected to strengthen the Revenue Department’s Kaveri portal.
