Kota: 7 conduct cockfight; nabbed

Kota: Upset over the lockdown keeping them confined at home, a group of men who tried to have some entertainment by conducting cockfights has been arrested for showing cruelty to birds and for also placing bets.

The arrested have been identified as Madhukar (33), Jayaram Shetty (49), Prashanth (42), Raghavendra (39), Lokesh Barkur (35) Sudhakar (39) and Suketh (29).

The arrests were made on Monday, April 6 in Kota. The police recovered two fighter cocks, 8 two-wheeler vehicles and Rs 6,880 in cash that was used for the betting.

The incident took place while the lockdown was in force in the country. The seven accused instead of being at home had gathered at one of their plots. They purchased two roosters for the betting activity.

The police got a tip-off about the gathering of few men and as it was a clear violation of the government order that was passed to control the spread of coronavirus a team lead by Kota Police station ASP Nithyanadha Gowda carried the operation arrested the accused.

All the accused have been booked for subjecting animals to cruelty under the Karnataka Police Act of 1963.
