Krishna in spate, island residents stranded

Yadagiri: Neelakantarayanagaddi Island residents are stranded as the Krishna is in spate. The Deputy Commissioner held a meeting of authorities at Narayanpur to learn the flood situation.

In the interim, authorities of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited (KBJNL) discharged more quantum of water from the reservoir in Hunsagi taluk of the district on Thursday. 

As indicated by official sources, 1.73 lakh cusecs of water was released from the reservoir into the Krishna on Thursday when 1.73 lakh cusecs of water was the inflow recorded from the Alamatti dam into reservoir. 

The water level in the reservoir remained at 491.30 m against a full reservoir level of 492.25 m. Of the 30 doors in the dam, 16 were opened to discharge water, the sources included. Neelakantarayanagaddi Island occupants stayed stranded on Thursday as well and couldn’t get to the outside world as the Krishna is in spate. After six inhabitants came back to the island from the mainland on Wednesday, none from the island were ready to go out to the mainland on Thursday. 

In the mean time, the district administration has kept a boat prepared for service to the island from the mainland, enabling inhabitants there to go to the mainland for their work.

The Krishna under the Kollur bridge near Kollur village in Shahapur taluk is barely short of six ft before it floods onto the bridge. If the bridge submerges, the Raichur-Kalaburagi main road will be cut off and standing crops on hundreds acres of land of agricultural area are probably going to immersed.
