In a written reply to an unstarred question in Rajya Sabha by Subramanian Swamy, Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh said “No such proposal to rename the existing Mangaluru Airport has yet been received from the State Government of Karnataka. The decision on renaming of Airports is taken by the Union Cabinet after due consultations with the concerned Central Ministries/Departments.”
The minister also said that the proposals for naming/renaming of airports are considered based on the recommendations of the concerned State Government accompanied by a Resolution passed in the State
Legislative Assembly. There have been demands from some quarters of the public to rename the Mangaluru Airport after local legendary figures including Veera Rani Abbakka, the Tuluva Queen who had fought the Portuguese, or Koti and Chennaya, Tulu warriors. Some also put forward the idea of renaming the airport as Tulu Nadu Airport.
