Prof Mayya had served in the Botony department at Bhandarkar’s College in Kundapur for 33 years. He was unwell due to age-related complications and breathed his last at his residence in Manki near Gangolli, sources said.
An avid Yakshagana enthusiast, Prof Mayya would visit performances with a tape recorder in hand and documented the Bhagavathike (singing) of the 1970s and 80s. These recordings have been preserved and serve as an important record of the folk art of the Karavali coast.
As per his wishes, the family sources said, that his mortal remains would be donated to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.
