The principal of a government PU college here convened a meeting with Muslim female students wearing hijab. He then relayed the government orders to the hijab-clad students, who urged on wearing hijab inside the classrooms. The principal then allowed these students to enter the campus but seated them in separate classrooms.

Meanwhile, the students from Venkataramana College in Kundapura marched in a parade dressed in saffron shawls. The principal stopped the march at the college grounds as it was approaching the college.

The college principal and Sadashiv Gavaroji, Kundapur police sub-inspector who prevented the students’ further movement, told them that those wearing saffron shawls would not be permitted into the college. The principal and the students got into an argument.

The saffron shawl-clad students stressed that if they encounter students wearing burqas or hijabs on their way to college, they will enter with saffron shawls draped over their shoulders.

After the principal stated that burqas and hijabs are not permitted inside the college, the students returned to class, removing their saffron scarves.
