Malpe fishermen’s protest turns violent

Malpe: A fight broke out between the leaders of deep sea fishermen and purse seine fishermen during the protest conducted by Malpe deep sea fishermen association against unscientific fishing methods including light fishing and bull trawl.

The deep sea fishermen alleged that no action has been taken yet against the unscientific fishing practices of the purse seine fishermen and hence they closed the fisheries port and conducted their protest. Meanwhile, the purse seine fishermen objected the closing of the port gate. On the occasion, a verbal argument broke out between leaders of the both the section resulting in a fight between them. However, the police intervened and controlled the situation.

Deep sea fishing stopped

The deep sea trawl boat owners association has called for strict action to be taken against those who assaulted the deep sea fishermen and asked that light assisted fishing be stopped completely. They warned that until then and as a sign of protest, all deep sea trawlers shall remain berthed and not go fishing into the deep sea.
