Mangaluru: GPs near MCC suffering from strict waste segregation rule

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation’s order making it mandatory for waste to be segregated into dry and wet waste for them to be dumped at the Pachanady dumping yard has caused a waste collection problem in gram panchayats near the city.

Most of the villages sent their unsegregated waste to the dumping yard but with the strict enforcement of the segregation rule, the waste sent by them is rejected by garbage handling staff at Pachanady.

As a result of this many gram panchayats have stopped door-to-door collection of waste leading to waste stockpiling at homes and being dumped on the roadside by residents.

Gram panchayats are yet to formulate a segregated waste collection system and some have only recently issued tenders for the same.
