Mangaluru: The British-era old port here which has been neglected for years will be donning a new look soon.
The Rs 94 crore redevelopment project has completed the tender issuance process, only the financial bidding and operations are now pending.
The redevelopment includes Rs 65 crore for the construction of a 350-meter wide berth, 2 warehouses, an overhead tank, 400-meter internal roads, a toilet etc. Rs 29 crore will be spent in dredging.
In recent years freight traffic has been booming in the old port even amidst the lack of many facilities. The annual movement of goods was 87 thousand metric tonnes in 2011-12 which increased to 1.5 lakh metric tonnes in 2017-18. The target for the next 5 years is 5 lakh metric tonnes and 8 lakh metric tonnes in the next 10 years.
The ports redevelopment will also accommodate tourist boats. A passenger ferry presently travels to Lakshadweep from here it must go via Kochi.
