Mangaluru: Ward Committees likely to be formed by February end

Mangaluru: The City Corporation is speeding up the process for the formation of Ward Committees, a long-standing demand of the city’s residents.

The Corporation will constitute a selection committee after which 10 members from each ward will be appointed to the ward committee from that ward.

The entire process is likely to be completed by the end of February.

The MCC Civic Group, formed by many of the city’s residents, has already started an online campaign demanding that the ward committee formation process be further speeded up.

513 people from across the 60 wards in the city have already signed up to the campaign.

The Corporation had completed the application process for membership to the ward committees on December 4. Over 1,500 applications were received by the Corporation before the last date.

Speaking to Udayavani Sudina, Nigel founder of MCC Civic Group, said, “There are 3 or 5 senior MCC officials on the selection committee for the ward committee. They review the applications and finalise 600 ward committee members The Municipal Commissioner assured us that the ward committees would come into existence by February 15.

Work for the formation of ward committees has been accelerated. Over 1,500 applications were received and their disposal process is underway. We are trying to complete the entire process in a month. The ward committee is expected to start functioning by the end of February,” said Mangaluru City Corporation’s Municipal Commissioner Akshay Sridhar.
