Nearly 11 years after an 18-year-old girl went missing in Palakkad’s Ayalur Village, she was traced about 500 meters from her parent’s house.

As per reports, the girl named Sajitha had been living secretly in a room with her lover who shared his house with his family. The family had no knowledge of the girl living in their house.

Reports state that Sajitha fell in love with Alinchuvattil Rahman and was living with him.

Sajitha’s family had lost all hopes of seeing her again. However three months ago, Rahman went missing from his home and his family lodged a complaint with the police.

On Tuesday, June 8, Alinchuvattil was spotted by his elder brother, and the trail led back to Rahman and Sajitha, who were found living on rent in another village.

The couple was brought before the local court by the police and the court upheld Sajitha’s will and allowed them to live together.

The couple had kept their relationship a secret as they belonged to different religions, informed Nenmara Police Station House Officer, Deepa Kumar.

The officer said, “Their story sounded unusual. We took them to Rahman’s house and they told us how Sajitha lived secretly in a single room for over a decade.”

Sajitha left the home at night in February 2010 and walked into Rahman’s house next door.

The police looked for her everywhere but as she didn’t have a phone, they couldn’t find her.

Rahman was never suspected then in 2010 as no one knew about their affair and also because he did not go missing as usually happens if two persons elope together.

Rahman worked as a house painter and had a separate room. Basheer, Rahman’s brother told that mentioned how Rahman was hot-tempered as well, hence no one really bothered with him.

Basheer further informed that sometimes Rahman would behave like a mentally deranged person and he would become violent if someone tried to enter his room.

Basheer said that Rahman used to take his food in the room to eat.

Pushpakaran, a Panchayat member and also Rahman’s neighbor, said, “He was always an introvert and was suspected to have mental issues,” and how it was more understandable why he had removed the bars from his room’s window.

Sajitha would go through the open window of the room at night as there was no attached washroom. She dried her washed clothes inside the same room itself.

Rahman told the court that he was afraid of his family objecting to Sajitha. Although the reason for her staying locked in a room for 11 years is still not disclosed.
