Monsoon might weaken

Mangaluru: The surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean is rising by the day. If in case this increases further, it will have an adverse effect on the upcoming monsoon season.

If ‘El Nino’ condition arises, then it will have an effect on the Asian countries. There is a possibility for a further increase in the maximum temperature, and can affect the coming monsoon season.

Previously in 2015-16 and 2016-17, the amount of rain received by the state was reduced due to the ‘El Nino’ effect and this also had an effect in the karavali. Normally during the monsoon season, 3,019 mm of rain was expected. But in 2015, there was only 2,214 mm of rain. In the same way in 2016, there was only 2,404 mm of rain and in 2017 there was 2,579 mm of rain.

During the last monsoon season also, there 6% deficit in the amount of rainfall in the state. A little more rain was witnessed in the karavali districts. In Dakshina Kannada district, of the expected 3,351 mm of rain, 3,532.6 mm of rain was experienced, which is an excess by 5%. Of the expected rain of 3,759 mm in Udupi district, 4,041.1 mm of rain was experienced, which was an addition by 7%. But Yadgir district witnessed the least amount of monsoon rains at 211.8 mm against the expected 610.8 mm of rain.

Now, the heat is increasing in the karavali. During the afternoon’s, it is almost impossible to venture out of the house due to the scorching heat and people are left completed exhausted unable to bear the heat. This time, the temperatures have begun to rise since the second week of February. As per the Weather Department’s forecast, the present heat is expected to last for some more days and the heat is expected to increase further more during the afternoons.

What is ‘El Nino’?

El Nino is the rise in the surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean to above-normal levels for an extended period of time. This increase in the temperature in the Pacific delay the onset of monsoon clouds in the Bay of Bengal. Also, there is possibility that the amount of rain bearing clouds may also be reduced. Because of this, the entry of monsoon may be hindered and the rain may be weakened. Besides, the rise in the temperatures in the Pacific Ocean may also cause the fluctuations in the temperatures being experienced here.

Rise in global temperature

“The global temperature is rising by the day and the surface temperature of the oceans is also on the rise. If it increases further, it may have an effect on the weather. The clear information regarding the type of monsoon the country will witness due to El Nino will be known during the last week on April,” informed Gavaskar Sang, KSNDMC, scientist
